How to Get up on a Wake or Surfboard
A beginner-focused walkthrough with clear progression steps. Use these sections before your charter so you get on plane faster, save energy, and start having fun early in your session.
Section 1: How to Get Up on a Wakeboard
The wakeboard start is all about posture and patience. Let the boat pull you up while you keep your knees close and your chest up.
- Start in a compact "seated" position with knees bent and board perpendicular to the rope.
- Keep arms straight and avoid pulling the handle to your chest.
- As the boat accelerates, stay compact until the board planes, then stand gradually.
- Look forward and keep weight balanced, slightly heavier on your back foot.

Section 2: How to Wakesurf
Wakesurfing begins with a deep-water start and then transitioning off the rope. The goal is to find the "push" of the wave and keep a relaxed athletic stance.
- Start with heels near the board edge, knees bent, and handle low near your lead hip.
- As the boat pulls, stand up smoothly and stay low through the first few seconds.
- Once in the pocket, maintain speed by small weight shifts (front foot to gain, back foot to slow).
- After stable control, toss the rope and ride hands-free on the wave.
